TZL Top Ten: Worst Comic Book Movies

Welcome back to another installment of TZL Top 10. This week we'll be jumping into the world of comic book movies. With the exception of a few movies in the last decade, comic book movies have generally been terrible. Whether it be bad acting, a terrible script or some of the worst cg you will ever see, there would be way too many to list. Because of that the only ones appearing on my list will be from 2003 and later. So here we go with my picks for worst comic book movies of all time.

10. Spider-man 3 (2007):
With the return of Toby Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco to their respective roles and the introduction of Venom (played by Topher Grace) Spider-man 3 was meant as the conclusion to a pretty good trilogy. Topher Grace was whiny and more annoying than intimidating as Eddie Brock (Venom). This was terrible casting all around. The dragged out, boring back story of Sandman did little to improve the movie and worst of all was the emo Spider-man Raimi and company thought would pass as a darker, symbiote infected Peter Parker. Of all the Spider-man movies released to date, including the Andrew Garfield ones, this is my least favorite by far. 6.2/10 IMBD, 63% Rotten Tomatoes.

9. X-men Origins: Wolverine (2009):
Most people see the first three X-men movies as essentially Wolverine movies, so Fox decided to just gave him his own.  The back story of a young Wolverine were brief, but not bad. It was the revenge/love story of Logan's wife being "killed" by Sabretooth on the orders of General Stryker that made it boring at times. Add in the "Deadpool" character that completely wasn't Deadpool and maybe the worst casting for Gambit possible (excluding Channing Tatum) and you get your first origins movie. On the plus side, there will be a Deadpool movie bringing Ryan Reynolds back for the lead role. 6.7/10 IMDB, 38% Rotten Tomatoes.

8. Superman Returns (2006):
After nearly 20 years since "A Quest for Peace" we finally saw the return of Superman starring Brandon Routh in the titular role and Kevin Spacey as Lex Luther. Most figured with Routh and Spacey having the look of their respective characters this would be the start of a great franchise, but it didn't even get a sequel. With an incredibly boring story mainly focused on Lois lane, her new love interest and her son, there wasn't much room for any action. 6.1/10 IMDB, 76% Rotten Tomatoes.

7. Green Lantern (2011):
Holy CGI Batman! That's the only response when thinking of Hal Jordan's first appearance on the big screens. Ryan Reynolds second shot as a comic book character wasn't bad because of him, but he didn't do too much to help it. At times it seemed like the movie was meant to feel campy, but I don't think that was the intended idea for the movie. 5.7/10 IMDB, 26% Rotten Tomatoes.

6. Daredevil (2003):
The one thing I liked about this movie, Michael Clarke Duncan as Wilson Fisk, but Netflix's TV series has already topped this by casting Vincent D'Onofrio. With little to no character development and an extremely unoriginal storyline, the one thing you can say for sure is it's better than the spin-off, Elektra, which doesn't say much. 5.3/10 IMDB, 45% Rotten Tomatoes.

5. Ghost Rider (2007):
Being voted by IGN as the worst comic book movie of the decade and a Razzi for Nicholas Cage for worst actor really should give you a clear idea of how bad this movie was. It somehow landed a sequel, but all that's proof of is money runs Hollywood (it was a box office success).  With some terrible dialogue and some ugly computer generated effects, even Eva Mendes couldn't save this movie. 5.2/10 IMDB, 26% Rotten Tomatoes.

4. League of Extrordinary Gentleman (2003):
Apparently Sean Connery was so embarrassed with this film it lead to his retirement. With hardly any character depth and the most boring story lines possible, there was obviously no enthusiasm for a sequel. 5.8/10 IMDB, 17% Rotten Tomatoes.

3. The Spirit (2008):
This was not Frank Miller's best work. The biggest flaws were overall lack of consistency, pointless attempts at humor and over the top acting. Shot in the same style as the successful Sin City films and featuring a cast of Scarlett Johansen, Eva Mendes and Samuel L. Jackson, it was such a box office flop that it reportedly cost Odd Lot Ent. tens of millions of dollars in losses.  4.8/10 IMDB, 14% Rotten Tomatoes.

2. Elektra (2005):
The previously mentioned spin-off of Daredevil attempts to be somewhat of a sequel, reviving Jennifer Garner's title character as a Contract Killer. Trained by The Stick, she battles The Hand (a ninja crime syndicate). At the time of its release its total gross was the lowest for a Marvel Film since Howard the Duck. 4.8/10 IMDB, 10% Rotten Tomatoes.

1. Cat-woman (2004):
Lastly, we have Selena Kyle in... oh wait that's right it's the newly introduced Patience Phillips as Catwoman... in not only my least favorite "comic book" movie of all time, but maybe even my all time least favorite movie all together. Even Halle Berry looking great in the leather outfit (with like Halloween style cat ears) doesn't make this movie anymore bearable. It's nearly impossible to sit all the way through this and even with how terrible Elektra was, it wasn't a close race for the top spot. All around scripting, CG, acting, story line... there is nothing I could pick out of this movie to make it better than the other. 3.3/10 IMDB, 9% Rotten Tomatoes.
